Abnormal Head Posture in Patients with Duane Syndrome (Abstract)
Ross Kennedy, M.D.C.M.
Abnormal head posture in patients with Duane Syndrome is common. Patients are commonly thought to turn their heads to enhance fusion. However, this is not the complete answer as many patients with no strabismus in primary position also adopt head turns.
Documentation should include a field of single binocular vision and sensory tests in the assumed head position in addition to a regular work-up.
Surgical treatment may consist of recessing muscles on the involved Duane eye to correct the abnormal head posture. Surgery on the "normal eye" may be desirable to improve the field of single binocular vision.
