Abnormal Head Posture in A and V Syndromes (Abstract)
Brian W. Arthur, M.D., FRCS(C)
A and V patterns occur commonly in patients with strabismus and should be suspected if a chin-up/down head posture is evident. Both rectus muscle dysfunction and oblique muscle dysfunction may be implicated in the etiology of such patterns. The surgical approach to correcting A and V patterns should be guided by careful measurements and attention to ocular versions in the cardinal positions of gaze. Elimination of the pattern can generally be achieved by horizontal rectus transpositions and/or oblique muscle surgery thus allowing the patient a greater field of binocular vision post-operatively.
