Prism Treatment of Acute Esotropia Following Interruption of Fusion (Abstract)
Kelly Elhatton, O.C.(C.), C.O.M.T. Michael X. Repka, M.D.
The authors report a 13 year old boy who suffered temporary occlusion of one eye following a minor ocular injury. The patient developed a comitant 35 prism diopter esotropia with diplopia. There was no evidence of a ductional deficiency. Treatment consisted of orthoptic management with Fresnel prisms. The patient was successfully weaned from prisms over 4 weeks. He remains orthophoric one year later. This case is uncommon as no signs or symptoms of esotropia were present before the injury, evidence of the strabismus has completely resolved, and the patient avoided surgical correction through the use of prisms.
