Diagnosis and Management of Abnormal Head Posture in Congenital Nystagmus (Abstract)
Paul R. Mitchell, M.D.

Approximately 20% of patients presenting with ocular torticollis will have congenital nystagmus. Though the most common method of measuring degrees of face turn or tilt is by estimation, the measurement of head posture with the goniometer is the most reproducible and accurate. Recession of the medial rectus of the adducted eye and the lateral rectus of the abducted eye, combined with resection of the lateral rectus of the adducted eye and the medial rectus of the abducted eye is the most common and effective method for broadening and shifting the null zone in patients with congenital nystagmus with a compensatory head posture.
