Binocular Problems in Bitemporal Hemianopsia (Abstract)
Maria J. Shainberg, B.A., Gill Roper-Hall, DBOT, C.O., COMT, and Sophia M. Chung, M.D.
One of the prerequisites for comfortable binocular single vision (BSV) is the presence of normal overlapping visual fields. Any defect in the visual field of one or both eyes may interfere with BSV. A heteronomous defect is the most disturbing, particularly when it is totally hemianopic. The neuroanatomy of the chiasmal region, etiology and mechanism of chaismal lesions, and the resultant binocular disturbances are discussed. The visual experiences of one patient with a tuberculum sella meningioma are described and illustrated.
