An Evaluation of Identical Twins with Strabismus (Abstract)
Kathy Smith, O.C.(C.), C.O.M.T,. Terry John Kaban, O.C.(C.), Rob Orton, M.D., Werner Cadera, M.D.
Twenty-eight pairs of identical twins with strabismus were evaluated. Esotropia was the most frequent type of strabismus, occurring in twenty-eight patients. Exotropia was present in twelve patients and one patient had Brown syndrome. The study group included thirteen pairs with strabismus occurring in both twins (concordant) and fifteen pairs with strabismus occurring in only one twin, with the other identical twin being orthotropic. In 71 percent of cases, refractive error was similar between each twin. Amblyopia was most frequent in the discordant group. Almost an equal number of patients in the concordant and discordant group exhibited binocularity.
