Exo-Biased Globe Force in Patients with Constant Exotropia (Abstract)
Arthur Jampolsky, M.D., Carter C. Collins, Ph.D., and Paul S. Howe, D.D.S.
Patients with constant exotropia may have instability of surgical realignment results due (in addition to sensory and overt mechanical muscle forces) to a) global forces, and b) masked posterior muscle forces. These findings show that despite satisfactory surgical realignment with oculorotary muscle lengthening and shortening, the temporary rebalancing of muscle forces might eventually be defeated by the constantly acting small globe exo forces over time-resulting in a recurrence of the exotropia. We must learn to master all these constantly acting forces to increase our permanent successful realignment rate, in patients with large degrees of exotropia.
