Publishing for Wisconsin,
Publishing for the World
since 1937
This is the
“Year of the Wisconsin Idea”
at the University of Wisconsin.
First attributed to University of Wisconsin President Charles Van Hise in
1904, the Wisconsin Idea is the principle that education should influence
and improve people’s lives beyond the university classroom. The Univer-
sity of Wisconsin serves our state, our nation, and our world.
The University of Wisconsin Press has embodied the Wisconsin Idea
for more than seventy-five years, extending the reach and influence of
our university throughout the world and making evident its commit-
ment to knowledge, ideas, and the arts.
• Our scholarly books and journals present original research and
analysis that is drawn upon by policymakers, opinion leaders,
journalists, and writers for general audiences.
• We help preserve the distinctiveness of local cultures through
publication of works on the Upper Midwest region and by Midwest
writers.
• We promote engagement with ideas that sustain a literate culture
and foster an informed citizenry.
• We give voice to minority cultures and perspectives.
• We reach a global readership with our journals and books, and also
bring the work of foreign scholars and writers to American and
English-language audiences.
• We partner with bookstores, libraries, museums, and cultural
organizations to provide free public programs and talks.
Living the Wisconsin Idea for more than 75 years!
