Wisconsin's Champion Trees
A Tree Hunter's Guide
Second Edition

R. Bruce Allison
Photographs by B-Wolfgang Hoffmann
Foreword by Dick Rideout

A champion tree is the largest recorded tree of its species. Champion trees have been officially recorded in Wisconsin since 1941. This book contains the location and measurements of 153 species of Wisconsin champion trees. It is published as a guide and a challenge to all Wisconsin big-tree hunters to find and nominate new record trees.

Trees are dynamic, growing and dying, within an ever changing environment. New trees have replaced many fallen champions. Although R. Bruce Allison and his associates have worked hard to revise old records, there are many grand trees still to be found.

R. Bruce Allison has been a professional arborist in Madison, Wisconsin, since 1974. His education includes a degree in writing from Brown University and a Master of Science in Forestry and Doctorate in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He served as president of the Wisconsin Arborist Association and chairman of both the Dane County Tree Board and Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council. He is the author of Every Root an Anchor: Wisconsin's Famous and Historic Trees published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2005; Tree Walks of Dane County (1981); and Tree Walks of Milwaukee County (1982). His articles have appeared in the Wisconsin Academy Review, Wisconsin Alumni Magazine, Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine, American Forests Magazine, Arborcultural Journal, and Shading Our Cities (Island Press, 1989).
