Talking to Strangers Patricia Dobler The Brittingham Prize in Poetry Ronald Wallace, General Editor Winner of the 1986 Brittingham Prize in Poetry In her first book of poems, Patricia Dobler records her memories of the Ohio mill town where she grew up in the 1950s. but the poems range over time and the memories of others, as well: her immigrant Hungarian grandparents, her parent's tensions during hard times ("Years spilled on the kitchen table, / picked over like beans or old bills"), the dangers, losses, and occasional triumphs of hard-working men and women. Patricia Dobler has received the Annex 21: American Poetry Series Prize, 1981, and the Associated writing Program Anniversary Prize, 1984, and has been awarded grants by the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Talking to Strangers was awarded the 1986 Brittingham Prize in Poetry. Dobler lives in Pittsburgh and teaches at both the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University.
